1. at the beginning（后面不接 of）的意思是“起初”，可以与in the beginning替换，两者没什么不同，但在现代英语中多用前者。比如：I thought he loved me; perhaps he did in the beginning. 我以为他爱我，或许开始时他确实是爱我的。（《朗文高级英语应试词典》p.180）
2. 依据葛传槼教授编著的《英语惯使用方法词典》，“begin at the beginning”不可以改为“begin in the beginning”；说世界的开端需要用in the beginning，不需要at the beginning， 如 In the beginning there were no men nor animals nor plants.
3.《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》第8版指出：at the beginning（of）指开始的时间和起点。in the beginning等于at first, 与后来相比。
4. 可以说 at the beginning of，不可以说in the beginningof ，比如：Theres a short poem at the beginning of every chapter. 每一章的开始都有一首短诗。/ The town was founded at the beginning of the 12th century. 该镇打造于12世纪之初。（《朗文高级英语应试词典》p.180）
【参考】虽然2008年7月第1版《外研社英汉多功能词典》有in the beginningof的使用方法实例 （in the beginning of this century 本世纪初），但最好不要模仿。不然，在考试中容易被判为错误。
